Portfolio Update
Quarterly Update
The S&P 500 Index rose 6
percent during the quarter, in
spite of continued weak global
and domestic economic data, as
investors anticipated strong
policy responses from key
central banks. Those responses
arrived in September as the
U.S. Federal Reserve Board
(the Fed) launched its QE3
program and the European
Central Bank announced plans
to reduce borrowing costs in
the euro zone’s peripheral
countries. Nine of the S&P
500’s ten sectors finished
higher, led by energy,
telecommunication services,
information technology and
consumer discretionary. In
addition to QE3, the Fed kept
rates in the zero to 0.25
percent range and extended the
date for maintaining that
range to mid 2015.
