Portfolio Update
Quarterly Update
While U.S. equities had a strong 2012, they edged down slightly over the fourth quarter. Positive housing and employment data was somewhat overshadowed by weak third quarter earnings season results and by political wrangling over solutions to the fiscal cliff. The S&P 500 Index dipped 0.4 percent over the quarter, and five of its ten sectors finished in negative territory, led by telecommunication services, information technology and utilities. The U.S. Federal Reserve Board’s (the Fed) overall policy remained little changed as it held rates in the zero to 0.25 percent range in its December 12 policy announcement. The Canadian dollar declined against its U.S. counterpart, which lead to enhanced returns in Canadian dollar terms.
