Quarterly Update
Global equity markets rose this quarter, supported by improving economic data in the U.S. and China. Narrowing bond yields in peripheral Europe precipitated a value-led rally. Meanwhile, the Japanese market rallied on prospects of more accommodative monetary policy.
Cautious optimism is warranted in the months ahead. Despite some measures implemented to address the U.S. fiscal cliff issue, expiring tax cuts will still provide a drag to GDP growth in 2013. Policy uncertainty is likely to linger as the U.S. approaches its debt ceiling limit. The portfolio adviser continues to maintain a pro-cyclical stance while favouring companies with sustainable business models and attractive shareholder returns.
