Quarterly Update
Equity markets rallied during
the third quarter of 2012 as
central banks kicked monetary
policy into high gear in
September. The European
Central Bank demonstrated its
commitment to preserving the
euro through open-ended
purchases of sovereign debt in
an effort to lower government
borrowing costs; while the
U.S. Federal Reserve Board
announced its third round of
quantitative easing. The
global injection of liquidity
lifted commodity prices,
helping the Canadian equity
market to outperform by
double-digit gains from the
energy and materials sectors.
The S&P/TSX Small Cap Index
posted a strong 8.3 percent
total return, eliminating the
negative performance from the
first half of the year.
